This is some of the work I have done in my Media 1 class, while I am not extremely proud of some of the videos I was a part of, I still learned many things that have benefited me as a filmmaker. I feel that my cinematography skills have improved greatly throughout the course of this class, and it is very evident in the progression from my first video, to my music video.
The purpose/goal of this project was to create a 3-5 minute music video that had to visually tell a story in some way. In my video, the song I decided to pick was Charlie Brown, by Coldplay. I tried to tell a story of three boys who steal a car to go for a night out on the town, but throughout production this story had to change in several ways due to actors not being available at the same time. Due to this, I had to change the story to three boys looking out over a rooftop because one of my actors couldn't film one of the days. The aspects that I thought were executed very well were the time lapses, and how I was able to visually tell the story in a way that made sense. If I were to do this video again, I would make sure my actors could all film on certain days, so their schedules wouldn't conflict and I wouldn't have to compromise my story. Overall, I am pretty proud of how this turned out, but I think I could have done a much better job looking back on it.
The purpose of this project was to host and live direct a talk show with a partner. My partner for this project, Mark Emory, was the host of the talk show and brought in someone he knew who was a veteran. My job was to live direct a three camera setup and the cameramen operating these cameras. I felt I was a little slow to react to switching the cameras at certain times, especially in the beginning and ending when I switched to Camera 2 a little later than I should have. Besides this, I felt that I vastly improved in anticipating what camera to switch to at a given moment throughout the talk show. If I were to direct a talk show again, I would try to pay more attention to deciding when to switch from Camera 1 to Camera 3, as I had a hard time predicting where the conversation was going to go next. Overall, I am fairly happy on how this turned out, and I feel that I would do a significantly better job if I were to do this another time.
The purpose of this project was to record a fake press conference about an accident outside our school, and to create a 30 second voiceover/sound on tape press release that a news station would have. We did this project in groups, and my partner for this was Mark Emory. I was absent the day the press conference and B - Roll was recorded, so Mark did all the filming of these aspects of the video. I was responsible for the editing of this video and hand picking which parts of the press conference to include in the press release. Overall, if I were to do this project again I would try to get more b - roll, as we ran out of things that were relevant to the topic at hand. Other than that, I felt we did a good job of communicating the issue at hand in our time span of 30 seconds.
The purpose of this project was to create a newscast as the class was split into two groups and had the objective of forming 4 stories along with an intro to the newscast. I personally was responsible for the intro montage to the video, which I personally filmed and edited myself, as well as the overall editing of the entire newscast. If I were to do this assignment again, I would ask the groups assigned to craft the stories go more into depth on their topics. I would also like to re film the standup sections of the news package because I felt that it was either in poor lighting conditions or you could not hear the person who was talking. Overall, I am happy with how I edited the overall newscast as well as how I synched the intro montage with music.
The purpose of this project was to create a minute and a half news story on the current cell phone policy at Neuqua Valley High School. My partner in this project, Mark Emory, was the host of the story, and I was responsible for the recording as well as the editing of the story as a whole. If I were to do this project again, I would re film the stand up for the introduction and the ending because I felt that it looked a little rushed, and Mark was moving around too much in the shot. I would also boost the audio of the librarian talking, as she was talking extremely quietly, which made it hard to hear her. Overall, I am not very thrilled on how this turned out, but I feel that some aspects of this newscast turned out well, like the b - roll as well as the interview.
The purpose of this project was to create a commercial on one of several topics in a group, and my partner and I, Mark Emory, decided to base the commercial on Bose Headphones. Mark was responsible for the acting in this commercial, and I was responsible for the directing/cinematography of the commercial as a whole. Overall, I feel that this video contained too many cuts which would confuse the viewer. I also was not happy with the low angle shots that we added to this project, because I felt it confused the viewer with the fast cuts and different perspectives. If I were to do this video again, I would change how I shot the commercial as a whole, and I would incorporate longer shot lengths.
The purpose of this project was to create a 30 second commercial individually, and to come up with the idea and film it yourself. In this commercial, I used my brother as an actor, and the product I advertised was Kit Kat. I am pretty happy with how this commercial turned out, but if I were to do it again I would use a lighting kit to achieve better lighting results. I would also not have the scene of breaking the Kit Kat's go on as long as it did. Overall, I am happy with how I executed my idea and I feel that I told the story in a very effective and concise way.
The purpose of this project was to recut a movie trailer to change the feel/aspect of the story as a whole. My partner and I, Mark Emory, chose to recut the trailer of The School of Rock, and we wanted to change the trailer to seem more inspiring. If I were to do this project again, I would not try to make the story seem more inspiring because it did not change the feel of the story significantly in the time frame that we were given, which was a minute and a half. Overall, I really liked how we cut each respective clip with the music beat as well.
The purpose of this project was to form a car chase scene with clips that we were given. My partner for this project, Tommy Canova, and I both edited parts of this video and we also selected the music for this as well. If I were to do this project again, I would definitely change the music choice, as I feel that it comes off as a little corny looking back on it now. I also would re arrange the clips a little differently because there seems to be some continuity errors in respect to the background. Overall, I am not very happy with how this turned out but I feel that it taught me invaluable lessons in editing.
The purpose of this project was to create a narrative and script a story around the concept of two props, a bag and an umbrella. I personally was responsible for the directing and editing of this project. If I were to do this project again, I would definitely completely change how I shot the narrative as a whole, because I feel like we didn't have enough time to film the video, and we were pressed for time in general. Overall, I liked the idea of the video as a whole, but I feel like I didn't do a very good job of choosing camera angles and I am not very proud of how it turned out, but I learned many lessons from this.
